On Monday 6 October 2025, the Naval War College Nigeria (NWCN) inaugurated the Command Level Officers Course 8 at the NWCN Auditorium. The aim of the course is to prepare selected officers of the ranks of commander and lieutenant commander in the Nigerian Navy for the demanding responsibilities of command, both ashore and afloat. A total of 18 senior officers were inaugurated, comprising 10 commanders and 8 lieutenant commanders drawn from different specializations.
In his welcome address, the Commandant NWCN, Rear Admiral AO Olodude, welcomed all invited guests to the occasion as well as the participants to the College. He further congratulated the participants on their nomination for the course and urged them to approach the course with utmost seriousness, intellectual curiosity and commitment so as to broaden their perspectives, sharpen professional competence and build enduring bonds of comradeship necessary for effective command, leadership and management.
The highpoint of the ceremony was the inaugural lecture titled ‘Developing Future Generation Leaders in the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN): Imperatives for Commanders in the Nigerian Navy (NN)’ delivered by the Guest Speaker, the Fleet Commander Eastern Fleet, Rear Admiral KO Oguntuga. The aim of the lecture was to discuss future generation of leaders in the AFN with a view to developing commanders in the NN. During his lecture, the Guest Speaker underscored the fundamentals of military leadership noting that the focus of military leadership is to provide direction, purpose and motivation to personnel through clear communication and ethical conduct. He further highlighted some characteristics of evolving/future warfare, strategies for developing future generation leaders in the AFN and the benefits of developing future generation leader in the AFN.
The ceremony had in attendance the Command Operations Officer Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, the Deputy Commandant/Director of Studies, and Commanding Officers of Ships in Eastern Naval Command Area.
